Captain Ray Hughes comes home from a tour of duty after receiving
a letter from his soon to be ex wife Tammy, stating she has been
lonely and has found someone else. She also informs him that she
has left their three year old son TJ with his parents.
When he comes home he discovers that she took most of the
furniture just leaving him some odds and ends. She has also taken
his new truck.
In
the meantime Chrissie comes home from work to discover that
Captain Ray Hughes is home. She feels sad that Ray had to come
home to an empty house and no one to welcome him home. She decided
to take him some sandwich fixings and welcome him home herself,
which turned out not to be such a good idea. In the letters from
his wife he hears the name Chrissie as the one that went
out partying with his wife and probably is the one that hooked her
up with the new man in her life.
He
has some words with Chrissie and she tries to explain, that it was
not the way it happened, but of course he is still very upset, and
does not want to hear of it.
Trying to make the best of a bad situation he orders new
furniture and goes to pick up his son from his parents. It has
been a while since he has seen his son and at first TJ doesn't
know what to make of him, but quickly warms up to him.
When they get back home TJ can't understand why his mother is not
there or why she is not coming home and soon starts crying and his
father can't get him to stop.
Chrissies hears TJ crying and of course her heart goes out to
him. She has taken care of TJ several times while his mother went
out and has grown to care about the little guy. She debates going
over there, and tries to block out TJ’s cries, but it does not
work, and she ends up going over there. She doesn't even give Ray
time to send her away; instead she tells Ray that he has to let
her help. He wants to know what she can do about it and explains
to him that TJ knows her. To confirm this TJ opens up his arm and
reaches for her and tells Chrissie he wants his Mama.
Ray
just stands in the door way and watches as Chrissie has TJ blow
his nose, then washes his face. She then makes him some macaroni
and cheese which she calls comfort food.
Ray learns that Chrissie’s used to baby sit TJ while Tammy would
go out. He also learns that Chrissie’s husband was killed in an
assault in Fallujah and that she is not the jezebel he thinks she
is.
It’s not too long after that sparks start to fly and Chrissie and
Ray start to have feelings for each other.
The sad part is Ray's ex-wife Tammy has told his lawyer after not
seeing TJ for 4 months that she wants custody of him. Chrissie
also hears a rumor that Ray’s Company may be shipped out again.
Will
Ray get to keep his son? Will things work out for him and
Chrissie?
A
Solider Comes Home
is a wonderful story about the different ways war can affect not
only you, but the loved ones you leave behind. For some it is
starting all over again. For others it’s learning to cope and move
on. Cindi
Myers has
a a way of making your heart go out, to all the characters in this
book, and if you have faith, hope and love, everything will work
out for the best.
I defiantly recommend you to read this story. I know I will be
looking forward to reading more stories by
Cindi Myers
in the future.
