Bolts of
pure energy whizzed through the trees, blasting craters in
the ground and turning the invading Gorg into small piles of
bubbling plasma. The forest shrieked in protest as raw power
screamed through the air, trees toppled over with a crash
and boulders exploded out of the ground. The echoes rolled
away down the mountainside, the remaining bits of power
vanished with audible pops and the forest took a timid
breath. Aerline peeked out from behind the trunk of a tree
as the noise faded and gasped, then ran to Kaowin’s side,
knelt swiftly and began whispering.
Excerpt:
As the tumult faded, Faran
blinked the dust out of his eyes. Rik stirred beside him and
struggled to his feet. “Man what hit us?”
“I don’t know.” Faran got to his feet and gazed around at
the destruction. “The Gorg’ve never done anything like that
before.”
“Look!” Rik pointed. “Someone’s under there.”
Faran squinted in the direction Rik was pointing and saw a
pair of boots sticking out from under a mass of shattered
wood. “Yeah. Come on, let’s see if we can get him out.”
“Hope he’s not dead.”
Faran threw Rik a black look. “Don’t even think like that!”
