Liam lost his wife 3 years ago due to cancer. He is left to care for his two sons, a troubled 7 year old and a cocky teenager. He is ready to date again, but wants to find a woman not just for himself, but for his children as well.

He meets Sophie a firefighter with FDNY. At first it  is just a fun and flirty relationship, but ends up turning into so much more.

Liam feels that because of the career that Sophie has chosen, he can’t take the chance of his children getting attached to her. They had enough coping with the lost of their mother.

Sophie loves her job, it’s a part of who she is, and she is not willing to give it up. She does understand that for the sake of Liam’s sons, it can’t go any farther.

But is it too late, how can they stop seeing each other when they can’t even get the other one out of their heads or out of  their hearts?

“Taking the Heat”, is a heart filled story, about a couple that falls in love, but discovers they must end their relationship before it barely gets started.

You can’t help but to fall in love with all the characters, Liam and his four brothers who own a pub, his sister who is married to the vice president, and Sophie who has proven over and over again that women can be just as good as any male firefighters. Your heart will also go out to Liam’s 7 year old son, who keeps a picture of his dead mother under his bed and talks to her about his dad and Sophie’s relationship.

“Taking the Heat”, is the third book in a series, it’s about love, passion, loss, sadness, and laughter all rolled into one. It has a twist where the woman has the dangerous job and the man is left to care for the children.

This is my first read from Kathryn Shay; I couldn’t put it down and will have to get the other two in the series, Someone to Believe In, and Close to You.
