Dale ran to his horse, pulled one of the Gorg knives out of a bag and walked back. He unwrapped it and held it up for the dragon to see. It looked at the knife and nodded its head. “Yes, that is one of them.” The dragon’s words dropped like a stone into the pit of Dale’s stomach and he fought down the urge to flee. He steadied his nerves and wrapped the knife up. “King Yaybar must not die.”
Dale frowned at the dragon. “Who is King Yaybar?”
“I have no idea,” the dragon said, swinging its head from side to side. “But in the vision I see two roads. If he dies, all is lost and the army devours all life. If he does not, victory is certain and the army is vanquished back to the heavens from which it fell
.”

“Can you tell us the way to Villenspell? I think it just became critical that we reach there as fast as possible.”
“Go back the way you came for you surely will not reach there by entering the swamp. But I can give you no better instructions than this for I do not know where it lies.”
Dale bowed toward the dragon. “Thank you. We’ll try one of the other roads.”
The dragon looked intently at Dale. “You intend to fight this swarming army?”
“I don’t think I have much choice. Maybe I can find some wizards at Villenspell who don’t have any common sense and want an adventure.”
The dragon smirked. “That would define most wizards I’ve ever had the displeasure to know.”
“And maybe they can tell me who this King Yaybar is, or at least where I can find him.”

The dragon nodded its massive head. “Perhaps.” It lifted its right forepaw and dropped its voice an octave. “I wish you success in your quest, Knight of Heaven.”
Dale peered at the dragon and crossed his arms. “I wasn’t aware that I held such a title.”

The dragon dropped its forepaw back on the ground and winked at Dale. “You do now. I just gave it to you.” The dragon swung its head around and surveyed the company once more. “Fare well. I wish you good fortune… you’ll need it.” It vanished in a billowing cloud of fog.

Wizard’s Bane is the first book of The Sojourn Chronicles, six books that recount the adventures of Dale, a member of a large space fleet, who is marooned on a world similar to 18th-century Earth. He discovers very quickly that being stranded is the least of his problems; the world he is on is about to be destroyed and he's the only one that can save it. Without any clear direction, or the tools to do so, he sets out to try, encountering magic, mayhem and chaos at every turn.
